Is IPTV Legal in the UK? — What You Need to Know

IPTV just means TV delivered over the internet, and the technology is legal — Sky Glass, Sky Stream, BT TV and Now all use it. What matters legally is whether a provider has the rights to what it streams, and whether you have a TV Licence for live TV. This guide explains both, and the checks worth doing on any provider. It is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.

The Key Points in Brief

📡

The Technology Is Legal

IPTV is how many mainstream UK services already deliver TV.

©️

Rights Are the Real Issue

Copyright law covers who may distribute content, and accessing infringing streams can itself be unlawful.

📄

TV Licence Still Applies

You need one to watch live TV or BBC iPlayer, however it reaches your screen.

📦

Devices Are Legal

Firesticks and Android boxes are ordinary devices. Selling pre-loaded boxes for unauthorised access has led to prosecutions.

🔒

VPNs Are Legal

A VPN changes who can see your traffic, not the legal status of what you watch.

How UK Enforcement Has Worked

The main law is the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. Distributing content without the rights can be infringement, and section 297 makes it an offence to dishonestly receive a broadcast to avoid paying for it.

Enforcement has mostly targeted sellers and suppliers — particularly people selling pre-loaded devices or unauthorised access — with action led by rights holders such as the Premier League and by FACT. Courts also order ISPs to block infringing streams. Rare action against viewers is not the same as permission.

Whichever provider you use, you still need a TV Licence for live TV. If you need certainty about your situation, especially if you plan to resell, speak to a solicitor.
